NotesTonight Iâll tell you what gets me excited about my homelab and maybe inspire you to make your own. I'll get into what I like about it and clue you into some of the fun you get to have if one of your projects meant to protect your homelab goes hockey-stick.FeedUnfurl

NotesThe Artillery Platform, which Atlas is built upon, uses JavaScript and WebGL to deliver a high-quality, low-latency multiplayer gaming experience to anyone with a modern web browser. The platform is centered around 3D experiences with real-time multiplayer capability and strong community support. The JavaScript-based game engine features a component-entity design, a modern deferred rendering pipeline, and development tools designed to allow creative expression and super-fast iteration.Unfurl
NotesWas playing Doom the other day and was reminded of this effect. I wanted to give it a shot using js and canvas of course. The original .c source can be seen here https://github.com/id-Software/DOOM/blob/master/linuxdoom-1.10/f_wipe.cUnfurl

Notes Introducing a new use for Firefox 3D view: Creating sculptures using DOM elements! For my first project using 3D view, I figured I'd take a skyscraper in Hashrocket Chicago's neighborhood and attempt to recreate it using DOM elements and absolute positioning. The resulting building ended up being inspired by the design of the John Hancock Center, but is not a scale replica by any means. Unfurl
Notesnpm, the package manager that comes bundled with node.js, is generally described as âawesomeâ. While it was originally a separate project, npm has been bundled with node.js for the past few releases and the number of npm packages available in the npm registry has exploded.Unfurl
Notes The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)'s Cyber Fast Track program helped funded the development of the Power Pwn. Pwnie Express, which developed the $1,295 gizmo, says it's "a fully-integrated enterprise-class penetration testing platform." That's great, but the company also notes its "ingenious form-factor" (again, look at the above picture) and "highly-integrated/modular hardware design," which to me translates to: it's the perfect tool for hacking a corporate network. NotesThe beast above is a robotic system intended to be operated remotely in hazardous areas where network infrastructure is scarce. The robot is controlled over a WiFi network that originates on the robot and is extended by dropping the black repeater units on its back. I and seven other computer and electrical engineers built this monster as part of a senior design project at Northeastern University.Unfurl
NotesThereâs little that ignites my imagination more than the swashbuckling outer space dogfights of yesteryear. So, I was excited to write a bombastic, retro-infused soundtrack for âMoon Breakersâ â a multi-player online combat game from Imba Entertainment / Uber Entertainment that is now available to play for free on Steam.FeedEmbedUnfurl

NotesUbu Productions is an independent production company founded in 1982 by producer Gary David Goldberg. Ubuâs had made some pretty famous shows, including Family Ties and Spin City. If the name sounds familiar, it might be that you love those shows or it is more likely because at the end of many Ubu produced shows, you had a photo of a black Labrador Retriever with a Frisbee in his mouth. NotesPhil Torrone of Adafruit sent me a bag full of maker skill patches. When my 9-year-old daughter came home from school today, her eyes popped out like a Tex Avery wolf. I told her she could have them all, but she has to earn them! Iâll work with her to help her earn the LED patch first.FeedEmbedUnfurl

NotesAlthough current talk of national healthcare may seem new and revolutionary, it is far from the first time this issue has received national attention. Long before last yearâs debate on national healthcare, prior to the healthcare discussions posed by Hillary Clinton in the 1990s, concerns over rising costs and the provision of healthcare in the United States generated attention in the late 1960s.Unfurl

NotesThe Descriptive Camera works a lot like a regular cameraâpoint it at subject and press the shutter button to capture the scene. However, instead of producing an image, this prototype outputs a text description of the scene. Modern digital cameras capture gobs of parsable metadata about photos such as the camera's settings, the location of the photo, the date, and time, but they don't output any information about the content of the photo. The Descriptive Camera only outputs the metadata about the content.Unfurl
NotesI dissected all of Hitchcock's Rear Window and stiched it back together in After Effects. I stabilized all the shots with camera movement in them. Since everything was filmed from pretty much the same angle I was able to match them into a single panoramic view of the entire backyard without any greater distortions. The order of events stays true to the movie's plot.Unfurl
NotesMarriage is a sacred commitment; it's no kind of small thing to consider. You need to show you mean business. You need to put some effort into a proposal.
Jered McFerron did when he decided to rewrite the code for the 1986 NES classic, Metroid, in the C++ programming language. This undertaking wasn't initially to propose to his love, Jenni, but struck as an inspiration mid-project when he knew she was the gal for him.FeedUnfurl
NotesI thought it would be interesting to produce a kind of personal encylopedia: each volume cataloguing the links for a whole year. Given I first used Delicious in 2004, that makes for eight books to date.FeedEmbedUnfurl
NotesThe Miura-ori is a method for folding up a sheet such that it can be opened or closed in one smooth motion. A Miura sheet has only one degree of freedom, and can be thought of as having only two states: fully open, or fully closed. Since reversing one fold in the sheet (that is, making a âmountainâ into a âvalleyâ) requires reversing all of the adjacent folds as well, the Miura sheet feels as though it has a memory, and is very resistant to deformation.Unfurl
Notes Presenting the Dymaxion Auto-Matic Buckminster Fuller. It's a retro-futuristic black and white screen mounted into a 1950s (or so) radio chassis, which generates and displays text that American luminary R. Buckminster Fuller might have said if he were a piece of software.FeedUnfurl
NotesMany people have been clamoring for me to post an âofficialâ Ready Player One soundtrack. NotesWhen I'm not writing reviews for JayIsGames, I work full-time as a wizard. It's not easy work, believe me, nor is it nearly as glamorous as the movies make it out to be. One wrong incantation and you've blown yourself up or summoned an uncontrollable horde of demons. Arzea, a Metroidvania-style adventure game created by Arkeus originally for a Ludum Dare 24-hour game development competition and then expanded upon, demonstrates the kind of danger that magic can lead to. You're a wizard stranded in a strange world with only your wits and a variety of spells and upgrades to help you get home.Unfurl

NotesHere at GeekDad we review a lot of products â books, toys, gadgets, software â and I know itâs impossible for most parents to actually afford all of the cool stuff that gets written up. Heck, most of us canât afford it either, and weâre envious of the person who scored a review copy of a cool board game or awesome gizmo. (Disclosure: that person is probably me.) So while we love telling you about all the cool stuff thatâs out there, I understand that as parents we all have limited budgets and we sometimes need help narrowing down our wishlists.Unfurl
