NotesOkay, so now I've got your attention - it's true - the cabinet construction was completed in 24 hours, but it took about three months to get around to the last few bits (like decorating the unit), so don't complain if after one day you don't get something that looks like the unit on the left!Unfurl
NotesCommunicating with a host computer can allow a simple Arduino-based system to gain access to a wide variety of devices and information. Most people link an Arduino to a host using serial communications across a USB connection with custom code running on the host to send information to the Arduino or receive it in return, but giving your Arduino the ability to pretend to be a keyboard or mouse opens up a whole world of possibilities because it means your Arduino can interact with software that was never intended for external control. That could be desktop software such as a game or a web browser: your Arduino could "type" into a web form and submit it on your behalf, or act as a custom controller for a game!Unfurl
NotesIn this tutorial, you will learn how to setup a complete Node.js development environment, including NPM (the Node Package Manager) and Cloud9 IDE to edit, run, and debug Node programs. The following installation instructions have been sucessfully tested on Debian 6.0 “Squeeze” and on Ubuntu 11.10 “Oneiric Ocelot”, but they should also work properly on previous versions as well.FeedUnfurl

It should run on any system with a recent Python installed. That means OS X out of the box, most Linux distros, and any Windows system where the user has installed python."Unfurl

Notes"Git and Subversion can work together in many ways. Previously, we showed how Git users can work with a project primarily managed by Subversion. In this post, we describe one way to handle the converse: Google Code acts as a stable read-only Subversion mirror of a Git project. In this model, patches are first applied to the central Git repository and exported to Google Code later."Unfurl
Notes"Carbonating tap water to make seltzer is easy, fast, and absurdly inexpensive with my improvised apparatus. All that is required is to place CO2 (carbon dioxide) gas in agitated contact with chilled water for a few seconds. In this essay, I'll show you how it is done with easy-to-find parts and common PET (polyethylene terephthalate, sometimes called PETE) soda bottles. I'll also explain the kinetic chemistry of why it works so well. And in the second half of this essay, I'll explain how I progressed from this improvised apparatus to installing a complete soda fountain in my home.

Notes"However, I don't refer to commonly used shortcuts that a noob would find cool. I am talking about a seasoned unix user (be she/he a developer, admin, both, etc), who thinks (s)he knows something 99% of us never heard or dreamed about. Something that not only makes his/her work easier, but also is COOL and hackish. After all, vim resides in the most dark-corner-rich OS in the world, thus it should have intricacies that only a few privileged know about and want to share with us."Unfurl

But if you're a big fan of Adblock Plus—the most popular Firefox extension among Lifehacker readers—you can save yourself an extension installation and universally block ads across your entire home network by adding a custom script to your Tomato firmware."FeedUnfurl
Notes"On the SVN server the first thing we did was to create a special Verbatim user that can commit to SVN via SSH using a generated key. We copied this key to the Verbatim host which allowed us to commit as the verbatim user without typing a username or password. The only thing that was added to the Verbatim code was a patch that Dan Schafer cooked up that sets an SVN revision property, translate:author, to the name of the current user. When the user clicks “commit” this property is set and sent along with the commit.Next we added a post-commit script that looks for the translate:author property. If it’s found it will take that value, replace svn:author, and remove translate:author; effectively making whatever was in translate:author the real author. This is a non-versioned change which means there is no commit that needs to happen - the new author is set immediately."Unfurl

Notes"Instead what happens when software developers try the Hollywood Launch, and I've seen this many times, is that users indeed do flood to your site on launch day but... Tomorrow, hardly any of those users come back. Your traffic graphs look like the sharpest mountain you've ever seen: a huge climb up and then, almost immediately, a similarly-sized crash back down. ... So what do you do then? Well, you do what you should have done all along: you grow the site."Unfurl
Notes"Mercurial Queues, or MQ, is a Mercurial extension that lets you keep work in progress as mutable patches, instead of as immutable changesets. ... The output of a developer (on a good day, anyway) is patches. The MQ extension lets you treat a stack of patches as works-in-progress. You can apply them as Mercurial changesets, unapply them, edit them, and when they're done, turn them into permanent changesets and push them."Unfurl
Notes"So you have gigs of data to transfer between two machines over ethernet. A nice quick and dirty method is to use netcat and tar. This is by no means secure, but if you haven't got the time or desire to setup NFS, FTPd, Samba. Or wait hours for scp to do its job then this can save you a lot of time. "Unfurl
