Notes<blockquote>Given the above facts I think you’ll agree, Java is not stagnant, it’s getting much better on the eyes and fingers and it has been adopted by cool, non-stodgy companies. Then perhaps you’ll also agree it’s wrong to say Java is the new COBOL, just as wrong as saying Ruby is the new Java.</blockquote>

NotesBefore you know it, we'll be building circuit boards with 3D printers. In other words, 3D printers will help us manufacture PCs. Or even, other 3D printers.

NotesDespite a number of cogent arguments against it, Apple is going through with the requirement for apps in the Mac App Store to be sandboxed. A number of Mac developers have already spoken up about the policy, but Apple's going through with it anyway. Initially set to go into effect this month, A...Unfurl
Notes[Blaise Jarrett] has been grinding away to get the WebSocket protocol to play nicely with PIC microcontrollers. Here he’s using the PIC 18F4620 along with a Roving Networks RN-XV WiFi module to get the device on the network. He had started with a smaller processor but ran into some RAM restricti...Unfurl
NotesThe One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project has devised a bizarre plan for deploying its new XO-3 tablet. The organization plans to drop the touchscreen computers from helicopters near remote villages in developing countries. The devices will then be abandoned and left for the villagers to find, di...Unfurl
NotesThe Vim text editor was first released to the public on November 2, 1991—exactly 20 years ago today. Although it was originally designed as a vi clone for the Amiga, it was soon ported to other platforms and eventually grew to become the most popular vi-compatible text editor. It is still actively developed and widely used across several operating systems.Unfurl
NotesSome people still like shit work. They can spend an hour moving Twitter accounts to special Lists, and then at the end of it look back and say “Boy, I spent an hour doing this. I really accomplished a lot today!” You didn’t. You did shit work.FeedUnfurl
NotesOh, I am so so tempted to commit to this for "Tinkering with Activity Streams", even though it's already over a day into November
"PragProWriMo is all about helping you write that technical book you’d really like to write but for some reason haven’t been able to get started.
We’ll provide supporting materials and encouragement and all you have to do is to write 60 pages toward that book during the month of November."Unfurl
NotesI have been on the road a lot in the past several months, and one thing I keep seeing is that folks are over-sharing. I am not talking about putting up those ribald pictures on your Facebook account, or forwarding those questionable email "jokes." But literally sharing your computer's data files across the hotel (and some airports too). Here is what my Mac Finder looks like at a Hilton that I was at earlier in the week (you can see that I am connected to several of my fellow travelers' PCs):Unfurl
NotesAnd then the product just died. Sales disappeared, until we could get out a version of the product that had most of the features of the other two, and added some new twists. Even then the product didn't get on a good footing until a year after that, when we came out with a product that did a lot more than any of our previous products. But I learned a lesson I would never forget. Even when you aren't actually taking features out of a product, you can't appear to the users to be doing that. They will make you pay for it. #FeedUnfurl
NotesUtilizing a technology known as time domain reflectometry, a pulse is sent through a wire every time it's touched until it hits a detector, which reflects the pulse back. Based on the speed of the pulse and the time it takes to return, software can pinpoint the starting point of the pulse. The touch-sensitive wire can be placed onto any regular item — the wire can even take the place of a guitar string, while a wire pattern can be embedded inside deformable objects like clothes.FeedUnfurl
