NotesSeriously? People really really believe that these animals feel no pain? Makes sense to me that an animal would have a pain response system to detect damage to its body, and that detecting damage would be an unpleasant sensation.Unfurl
NotesThat scientists are appearing more liberal and more generally support Democrats is not because they're political, it's that Republicans are denying reality and scienceUnfurl
NotesFrom pinboard.in/deusx: "I have an ex-grilfriend who's little brother would literally lick the contacts on his N64 carts. That's right, not a gentle 'phwwwww', but a full-on French kiss."FeedUnfurl

NotesFrom pinboard.in/deusx: "If we want to achieve the values and goals that are core to the geek community, I don’t think that we’ll ever make a difference by creating more martyrs that can be used as examples in a cultural war. As we collectively mourn Aaron’s death and channel our anger into making a difference, I think we need to look for an approach to change-making that doesn’t result in brilliant people being held up as examples so that they can be tormented by power."Unfurl
NotesFrom pinboard.in/deusx: "If I had taken the stand as planned and had been asked by the prosecutor whether Aaron’s actions were “wrong”, I would probably have replied that what Aaron did would better be described as “inconsiderate”. In the same way it is inconsiderate to write a check at the supermarket while a dozen people queue up behind you or to check out every book at the library needed for a History 101 paper. It is inconsiderate to download lots of files on shared wifi or to spider Wikipedia too quickly, but none of these actions should lead to a young person being hounded for years and haunted by the possibility of a 35 year sentence."FeedEmbedUnfurl
NotesFrom pinboard.in/deusx: "Fifty years in jail, charges our government. Somehow, we need to get beyond the “I’m right so I’m right to nuke you” ethics that dominates our time. That begins with one word: Shame. "FeedEmbedUnfurl
NotesHoly cow, that's a crazy insane markup on coffee pods: "In a 2012 article, New York Times coffee writer Oliver Strand calculated that Nespresso capsules are loaded with 5 grams of coffee each—which adds up to roughly $51 per pound of coffee. At press time, Stumptown Coffee Roasters was offering a 12-ounce bag of Panama Esmeralda Especial Peaberry for $45 (or $60 per pound)." And Panama Esmeralda Especial Peaberry is like the nirvana of the coffee world at $60 a pound. Not like the decent and drinkable $7 a pound Target coffee beans.Unfurl
NotesStanding all day isn't 100% better, but this is why I have a standing desk now and a tall stool for occasional resting. Much easier than a sitting desk and remembering to occasionally stand - my legs naturally tell me when to take a break. Think I've lost about 15 lbs doing this, too, and my legs are in great shapeUnfurl
